We are seeking a detail-oriented Copy Editor to join our team of volunteers. In this role, you will review and refine existing written content so it is clear, accurate, consistent, and ready to share. Your work will help ensure that communications about our mission, values, programs, and initiatives are professional, easy to understand, and aligned with our voice and mission.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong editing skills who wants to make a meaningful impact through careful, behind-the-scenes work.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit Existing Copy: Review copy written by team members for grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, clarity, readability, and consistency.
  • Review Communications: Edit content used in website pages, social media posts, blog articles, video and voice-over scripts, press releases, email newsletters, fundraising campaigns, marketing materials, and messages.
  • Protect Brand Voice: Ensure copy reflects our organization’s approved tone, style, values, and messaging while preserving the original writer’s intent and voice.
  • Improve Clarity: Recommend or make edits that improve flow, organization, concision, and audience understanding without changing the meaning of the content.
  • Maintain Consistency: Check terminology, capitalization, formatting, names, dates, links, calls to action, and other details for consistency across materials.
  • Proofread Final Drafts: Conduct final reviews before content is published or distributed to catch errors and confirm that copy is polished.
  • Flag Concerns: Identify unclear wording, incomplete information, factual claims needing verification, or language that may be misleading, insensitive, or inconsistent with organizational guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the Team: Provide respectful, constructive editorial feedback to copywriters, designers, marketers, and social media team members.
  • Follow Guidelines: Help ensure content follows applicable brand, legal, ethical, copyright, and data-protection guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent proofreading and copy-editing skills, with a strong command of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style.
  • A careful eye for detail and the ability to spot errors, inconsistencies, and unclear language.
  • The ability to improve copy while preserving the writer’s intended meaning and voice.
  • Previous experience in copy editing, proofreading, writing, communications, or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Strong written communication skills and a respectful, collaborative approach to feedback.
  • Familiarity with common content formats, including social media, emails, website copy, and marketing materials, is helpful.
  • Ability to follow a style guide and apply brand standards consistently.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage editing assignments and deadlines.
  • Proficiency with digital writing, review, and collaboration tools.
  • Familiarity with Christian fundamentals and Scripture, with the ability to help ensure faith-based content accurately reflects our mission goals and makes accurate references to biblical passages.
  • Commitment to our organization’s mission and values.

Benefits:

  • Be part of a mission-driven non-profit organization that empowers others to deepen their faith.
  • Gain valuable experience in copy editing, communications, and content development.
  • Develop your skills in a collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Flexible scheduling options to accommodate your personal commitments.
  • Receive references and recommendation letters upon successful completion of your volunteer service.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience working in a volunteer, ministry, or non-profit environment.
  • Familiarity with social media, email marketing, or website content-management platforms.
  • Experience using collaborative editing tools such as Google Docs, Microsoft Word, or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with a recognized editorial style guide, such as AP Style or Chicago Manual of Style.

Please Note:

  • This is a remote volunteer position; no compensation is offered.
  • The expected time commitment is approximately 1-4 hours per week. We are flexible and can accommodate your availability.
  • We are committed to providing support and guidance throughout your volunteer experience.

If you are passionate about our mission and interested in helping us communicate clearly and faithfully, we encourage you to apply.
